Porsche 911 Carrera S vs Corvette Stingray Video

Can you compare a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with a Porsche 911 Carrera S that has options worth the price of the Vette? Well, Chris Harris says you can, if only to prove money is not always the best indicator of a car’s capabilities.
While the tested Corvette cost around $60,000, the 911 Carrera S had a starting price of approximately $100,000, plus $60,000 worth of options!
Naturally, that begs the obvious question: was the 911 almost three-times better than the Corvette C7? Harris put both cars to the test on the track to find out, and some of his conclusions were quite surprising.

The “slow and cumbersome” optional six-speed automatic gearbox was the Vette’s only major downside in Harris’ view, but there’s a solution for that: don’t spend extra money on it and choose the standard seven-speed manual - or wait for the upcoming 8-speed auto.

As for the Porsche 911 Carrera S, it’s everything one should hope for from a 911, but the price difference is so big that the two cars are in totally different leagues. Scroll down to watch the review.

  1. The last generation Corvette compared to the Porsche was embarrassing to GM to say the least. I don't know why anyone would ever even consider buying the older Corvette, even their top-of-the-line model, if they could get a 911, any 911.

But this Corvette is a different animal entirely, too bad they couldn't get the manual version, I'd really like to see that one tested in such a comparison. A standard automatic in this car is an insult and a disservice to the top notch engineering of the car. It should really have a dual clutch automatic, razor-sharp, fast shifting dual clutch transmission, like the one found in the Lancer Evo. Let's hope the new head of GM has the good sense to greenlight that option in coming Corvette models. I might prefer to drive a manual on a daily basis for the feel, but I would definitely buy this car with a dual clutch if they offered it, because that would be a faster car, no two ways about it.

Finally a Corvette that is worthy of being put up against a Porsche, I never thought I'd say that, but it's true. I might, just might mind you, consider buying a GM car over a Porsche, never thought I'd say that. I haven't bought a GM cars since my 1968 Cutlass convertible. Good job Chevrolet, good job General Motors.
