Audi’s £25k mid-engined R4 is destined for production in 2014/15, after chairman Rupert Stadler decided to press ahead with a plan to share platforms with new entry-level Porsche and Volkswagen two-seaters.
Previewed by the E-tron Spyder concept, the new sports car project has been the subject of intensive planning between Audi, Porsche and VW. Recent reports in the German media have even suggested the R4 had been placed on hold, amid concerns it was too close to the established TT.

In the process it capped the range with the new R8 Plus, and chose Moscow of all places as the first auto show at which to show the public the fruits of its labor.Captured on camera by our friends at Auto-Reporter, who were kind enough to share some photos with us, the new Audi supercar looks menacing even on the show stand, and surely got the lion's share of attention at the Russian auto expo.
The R8 V10 Plus draws inspiration from the company's latest Le Mans racers, and features a 5.2-liter V10 dialed up to 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. The Plus model replaces the limited-edition R8 GT and hits the market first solely in coupe form. Further distinguishing the V10 Plus are carbon fiber splitter, mirror housings, wider side blades and air vents, as well as special 19-inch lightweight alloys and a larger rear diffuser. Carbon-ceramic brakes, specially tuned springs and shocks, adaptive magnetic damping and LED lighting for the engine compartment complete the package.
First introduced in 2008, the R8 is Audi's first attempt at manufacturing a mid-engine sports car, let alone an exotic.
The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up Audi's first big customer sport programme. Audi R8 is a racing sportscar equipped with high-calibre technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle.
The heart of the R8 is a high-revving 4.2-liter engine that delivers 430 horsepower at 7,900 rpm. Peak torque is 316 lb-ft from 4,500 to 6,000 rpm, with no less than 90 per cent of this output maintained from 3,500 all the way to 7,600 rpm. The claimed zero-to-62 mph time is 4.6 seconds, though that number is likely conservative.
