Maruti Suzuki Celerio with the AMT gearbox seems to be outselling the Celerio manual at almost every dealership in the country
India has always been a manual transmission favouring country due to a few key reasons. Most of these reasons are preconceived notions in the minds of the Indian public and sadly due to ‘word-of-mouth’ being one of the few key factors in the average Indian’s car buying process, the automatic gearbox has earned a poor reputation. Maruti’s tryst with the automatic gearbox started way back in the late 80’s when they equipped their hot selling Maruti 800 with a 3-speed automatic. Later in the mid 90’s, Maruti Suzuki offered an automatic version of both their Zen and Esteem with the same old 3-speed automatic gearbox. Needless to say, these cars rarely sold in decent numbers and were soon taken off the shelf. A similar trend could be seen with the addition of an automatic variant in the Wagon R and later the A-Star, none of which set the charts on fire.
Maruti has started accepting bookings for its upcoming Celerio at Rs 10,000
The Maruti Celerio has created quite a stir even before it’s unveiling and capitalizing on the buzz around the car. Maruti has started accepting bookings for the same at Rs 10,000. The car hasn’t reached the showrooms yet but once it is unveiled at the Auto Expo, it will be on display at all the Maruti showrooms towards the end of next week. We know one may think, what if the car does not lives upto the expectations? Worry not, the dealers will return your booking amount after deducting a small processing fee since you haven’t seen the car in flesh.
Maruti is known to build a large lot of cars prior to its launch so that it can flood the market with as many new cars as possible. They believe in the publicity gained by word of mouth concept. So more cars on the road means more owners to speak about their new car. According to dealers a large number of enquiries are already pouring in and the booking numbers are expected to be on a high.
A cheap auto 'box is what small diesel cars need. Maruti might have just answered this need with its EZ Drive tech
Maruti Suzuki is going all out to promote its new small car that will debut at the Expo, the Celerio. You can see it in the papers and hear it on the radio almost all the time. Now, we have told you what the Celerio is like, its specs; its variants; and even its engine and gearbox options. Read here for more.
And, since it's a small car, one that will go up against the Hyundai i10, you'd imagine these promotions would be centred on its features, its practicality, ease of driving and fuel economy. But no, Maruti is going to town with Celerio's automatic transmission. It is calling it EZ Drive, but, in reality, the Celerio’s auto unit isn't an automatic at all, well not in the true sense at least. Sure, one doesn't need to shift gears if one doesn't want to, and there's no clutch pedal either. But, this one is still a manual.
