The Fiat Linea has just received a thorough facelift. We drive the diesel Linea to find out if it has, what it takes to turn around its fortunes this time round
The Fiat Linea has been in the Indian market for about five years, but the buying public ever really warmed up to the car. As a market, we have appreciated its styling, its long equipment list and of course, its lovely ride and handling balance. But, in a segment that’s flooded with brands such as Honda and Hyundai, Skoda and Volkswagen - brands that clearly command a higher recall value than Fiat - the Linea has always struggled.
Now though, with Fiat’s recent focus on brand building, and its decision of going solo on the distribution front, it has given the brand recall bit a shot in the arm. But, Fiat isn’t stopping there; it plans to introduce new models and updates for its entire existing range. The latter begins with the new Linea diesel we have driven.
Fiat has forayed into the 'cross' segment with the Fiat Avventura Cross concept. We take a detailed look
The Cross or ‘styled-for-ruggedness’ segment is one that has never really been explored by any manufacturer in India. This might be due to the fact that the Indian audience has always been interested in the more traditional body styles like the hatchback, sedan and SUV, and in recent times, the compact sedan. Browsing through the many stalls at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo though one might think differently. With three new cross hatchbacks unveiled to the Indian public, this segment is finally gathering up some steam.
Fiat India will thrill auto enthusiasts by possibly unveiling its Abarth Punto Grande Evo and Fiat 500 Abarth at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo
Fiat India has been on a lull recently. Apart from a few variant launches, mainly a low priced Fiat Linea Classic range and two new top-of-the-line offerings in the Linea and Punto range, the Italian giant has been sleeping dormant in India. The 2014 Indian Auto Expo may very well be the stage they need to inject some genuinely deserved enthusiasm into this underestimated brand.

The first infusion of freshness comes in the form of a crossover version of the Fiat Punto hatchback. The Fiat Punto Avventure, as it is rumoured to be called will feature typical crossover styling like the CrossPolo or the soon to be launched Etios Crossover. The Punto sports a tailgate mounted spare wheel and plastic claddings which gives it a tougher and much more outdoorsy look, that might appeal to a certin strata of society. In our opinion though, the crossover style does not really suit a design like the Punto’s and would have synced better with the likes of a completely new car like the Fiat Panda for instance.
